16 Hrs Washington, D.C. Itinerary

Washington, D.C. Itinerary

The 16hrs Series

This itinerary is designed for travelers with limited time in D.C., either on a layover or a short trip. It maximizes efficiency while showcasing the city’s key attractions and experiences.

Things To Note

  • Travelers flying into D.C. have two airport options: Reagan National Airport, conveniently located within the city limits, and Dulles International Airport, a larger hub further out.
  • USD is the main currency. ATMs are widely available, but it’s a good idea to bring some cash for emergencies and small purchases.
  • While tipping is not mandatory, it’s appreciated for good service. Around 10-15% of the bill is customary at restaurants, and smaller amounts for taxi drivers and hotel staff. Some restaurants may include service charge, so check your bill.
  • D.C. has a good public transportation system, including the Metro (subway), buses, and bikeshare. The Metro is the most efficient way to get around, but rideshares and taxis are also available. Consider purchasing a Washington D.C. SmarTrip card for convenient fare payment.
  • Museums and attractions have varying opening hours. Most museums closed on Mondays. Plan your itinerary and purchase tickets online if necessary to avoid long lines. (Most museums are free.)
  • D.C. is generally safe, but be aware of petty theft in crowded areas like tourist attractions and public transport. Keep your valuables secure and stay vigilant.
  • Pack comfortable shoes for walking.
  • Bring layers as the weather can be unpredictable.
  • Research and purchase tickets online for popular attractions to avoid long queues.
  • Consider a Washington D.C. Explorer Pass for discounted entry to multiple attractions.
  • Learn about important D.C. landmarks and memorials in advance to enhance your experience.
  • Respect the city’s monuments and government buildings.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask locals for recommendations on things to see and do.
