Travel Day
Getting to Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge from Johannesburg is a breeze with your own wheels! Here’s all the information you need for a smooth and scenic journey:
Route options:
There are two main routes you can take, each with its own advantages:
Shortest Route (198.3 km, approximately 2 hours 43 minutes): This route takes you directly from Johannesburg to the lodge via the M1 and N4 highways. It’s the fastest option and perfect if you’re short on time.
Scenic Route (222.2 km, approximately 2 hours 46 minutes): This route takes you through the Hartebeespoort Dam and past Sun City, offering stunning views of the Magaliesberg mountain range. It’s a slightly longer drive but worth it for the scenery.
Things to keep in mind:
- Tolls: Both routes have toll roads. Make sure you have enough cash or an e-tag activated for your vehicle.
- Speed limits: Stick to the posted speed limits, especially on the highways.
- Fill up: Gas stations are readily available along the way, but it’s always a good idea to fill up before leaving Johannesburg.
- Rest stops: Take breaks every two hours to stretch your legs and avoid fatigue. There are plenty of rest stops along both routes.
- GPS: It’s always helpful to have a GPS or use a smartphone map app to ensure you stay on the right track.
- Wildlife: Be on the lookout for wild animals, especially near the reserve gate.
